Strong demand for environmentally friendly equine surface Strong demand for environmentally friendly equine surface   (posted 14/03/2008)

A Dorset organics recycling firm is galloping ahead after launching a new all weather woodchip for indoor and outdoor equestrian surfaces.

Eco Sustainable Solutions is reporting strong demand for its 100 per cent recycled Comfyride product, made from ‘clean’ wood such as pallets and joinery off-cuts.

The company recycles about 4,000 tonnes of clean wood annually at its 14-acre site at Parley.

Previously it was processed with ‘dirty’ wood, including medium density fibreboard (mdf), panels and melamine, and then sold onto chipboard manufacturers or as fuel.

Now, as a result of a new segregation and shredding process, the larger woodchip is sold as Comfyride while the finer grade will be used for horse bedding.

Justin Dampney, Eco’s Business and Marketing Manager, said: “Comfyride is environmentally friendly, soft under foot, easy to refurbish, easy to maintain and in keeping with the outdoor environment.

“It is early days but we’re very encouraged by the response we’re receiving from equine centres.”

Eco expects to produce approximately 20,000 cubic metres of Comfyride and finer grade horse bedding annually.
