Turnover up by a quarter at organics recycling firm Turnover up by a quarter at organics recycling firm  (posted 05/03/2007)

A DORSET company which operates the UK's largest composting facility for green materials is predicting further growth after reporting a 24 per cent rise in annual turnover.

Organics recycling firm Eco Composting (Eco) saw its turnover increase to £3.5m for the 12 months to December 31, 2006, from £2.7m previously.

Although the Parley-based company does not reveal its pre-tax profits, it says they are in “healthy six figures.”

Trelawney Dampney, Managing Director, said: “These are strong results with good growth in all of the company’s areas of activity including a 49 per cent increase in turf sales.”

He added: “Eco’s growth continues apace and we are on course to increase turnover by a further 30 per cent during 2007.”

Eco was founded in 1994 when Mr Dampney identified the potential in composting landscaper’s waste on his land and then selling the end product.

Thirteen years later the company employs 23 people and operates one of the UK’s leading organics recycling facilities with 120,000 tonnes of material processed annually on its 14-acre site at Parley.

The materials include soil (50,000 tonnes), green (30,000 tonnes), wood (20,000 tonnes) and commercial food (20,000 tonnes).

They are turned into a variety of end products including turf (450,000 m2); enriched topsoil (40,000 tonnes), compost (20,000 m3) and woodchip (1,000 articulated lorry loads annually to manufacturers of particle board.)

Total sales from end products added up to £1.5m in 2006.

Future plans by Eco include the building of a 2.25 megawatt biomass generator, providing heat and power for 5,000 homes. A detailed planning application is due to be submitted to Christchurch Borough Council within the next couple of months.
